Water on an upstairs ceiling
Look at what sits above and uphill from the stain: open roof slope, chimney, valley or roof window.
A slate or tile has moved
Photograph it from safe ground and compare it with the surrounding courses.
Water is running down an outside wall
Watch the gutter during rain and see whether water is spilling or getting behind the fascia.
The wall is damp beside a chimney
The lead, mortar joints, masonry and rear chimney detail all need checking.
A previous repair did not solve the leak
Note the weather when it came back and find out exactly what part of the roof was repaired.
